Plein Aire Painting Workshop

Plein Aire Painting Workshop, $270, 18 hrs, 6-8 Apr

Most of my best ideas come from nature.  So learning how to paint it seems like an essential part of my training.  For example, the image below was painted from a beach in Metchosin one hot summer afternoon, looking across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Hurricane Ridge in the Olympics. On that afternoon I learned how to ‘see’ the various distant blues and warm highlights on the summits.  I have used this shorthand many times since.

Knife Painting Workshop

Knife painting is such fun to do.  You basically ignore fussy details and paint big shapes in sheets of thick, buttery colour.  And the results are always exciting… colours blending on the canvas, delightful textures, etc.

1-Day Life Drawing Clinic

1-Day Life Drawing Clinic, $120, 6 hrs, 3 Mar

Clinics are 1-day workshops intended to worth on themes to refresh, redirect and kick-start artists.  In this life drawing clinic we will do warm-ups and draw from a live model for the entire day.  Each exercise and drawing has an immediate goal and I work with each artist to advise and critique as they draw.  We do group critique as well and I get to do lots of demo drawings too.  Bonus!  This workshop is great if you are just getting back into drawing, want to see where you are at with your drawing or as a prep for another upcoming workshop.

Underpainting and Glazes Workshop

Underpainting and Glazes Workshop, $270, 18 hrs, 23-25 Mar

This oil painting technique came down from the Renaissance (1400 AD), and is still a beautiful and highly effective technique to create glowing realism or highly graphic representations with speed and control.  Of the two schools (Flemish and Venetian) I tend towards the Venetian, working on canvas with glazing and scumbling over grisaille or bistre underpainting and finishing with sfumato and impasto.  In the studio I paint almost exclusively in this technique for my gallery works. Many of my gallery artist colleagues do this too or a nuanced variation.  It is one of the oil painting essentials.

In ‘Drawing Foundations Workshop 2′ we learn how to add artistic flare to the accurate lines and tone we learned in ‘Drawing Foundations Workshop 1′.  Here we focus on ’drawing refinements’ — how artists create sensitive line, perspective, foreshortening, lost & found edges, etc. to heighten interest and mystery in their drawings (and paintings).

In ‘Drawing Foundations Workshop 1′ we learn how to draw by eye.  I introduce 5 techniques: Dead Reconing, Direct, Comparative, Proportional and Sight-Size — to render objects in accurate lines and values to suggest realism.

Oil Painting Foundations Workshop

Oil Painting Foundations Workshop, $450, 30 hrs, 9-11 & 17-18 Mar

My ‘foundations’ workshops cover the basic essentials and, like their art college equivalents, provide students with the necessary craft, technique, knowledge of materials, etc. to start and complete a painting competently.  Because, in my mind — if more artists were introduced to oils the way I was, there were be many more oil painters around — I have made it a mission here to do just that.  These 5 days are intense but fun and interesting on all levels.  We cover double primary colour wheel, colour harmony planning, classical composition, monochromatic painting, underpainting & glazes, knife painting and much more. Along with ‘Drawing Foundations 1 & 2′ this workshop rounds out a strong foundation for the visual artist.
