Painting After the Group of 7

Painting After the Group of 7, $290, 18 hrs, 13-15 Apr

Like me, many Canadians artists were brought up on the works of these iconic Canadian landscape painters.  Click here for a video intro to The Group of 7, Tom Thompson and Emily Carr.

They — 7 from the original G of 7, 3 later members plus Thompson and Carr makes a total of 12 artists — were post-impressionists with a reasonably wide range of styles and technique between them.  They shaped landscape painting in this country from the early 1900s and still do. I love works by all of them and selected some of their best examples for the video, but there is just tons of stuff to see, so look ‘em up and enjoy.

Here we study, critique, copy and paint the techniques, styles and palettes of one or two of our favourite works then use this knowledge to build an original painting ‘after’ them.  Included is a half-day drawing on location from the original works of Emily Carr at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
